We get questions all the time from clients about how long they should hold on to important documents: account statements, tax returns, cancelled checks, and so on. Of course we are happy to provide advice on the topic, but then clients are on their own about how to dispose of their old documents. Many take the route of buying a home shredder. A small one will let you feed in one sheet at a time, and they eventually (or sooner) jam or burn out. So you go out and buy a larger one, and eventually you could spend all of a sunny Saturday shredding the contents of those boxes in your attic.
Don't do it! We don't get enough sunny Saturdays in Western NY, so rather than spend one shredding, Brighton Securities has arranged for a Free Shred Day on Friday, May 21st. We will have a large mobile shred truck from Shred-Text in the front parking lot of our main office (1703 Monroe Avenue in Rochester) from 1 - 4 pm. Please feel free to bring any documents you'd like to shred for secure, environmentally responsible destruction.
Our staff will be on hand to answer questions about records retention, and rumor has it that the Scoops Ice Cream truck will show up during the afternoon. We would love to have you stop by.
